Quiet before, then a first print at $0.99
On October 5, RUBI closed at $0.70. It traded between $0.673 and $0.74 on 20,772 shares. That is a very quiet day.
The first trade on the 6th was at 4:12 a.m. at $0.99, far above the $0.70 close. It was only 24 shares, and that same minute it traded down to $0.81. It slid from there. By 4:35 a.m. it had traded down to $0.70, back at the previous close and 29% under that first print. Most minutes before 5:50 a.m. traded under 6,000 shares.
5:54 a.m.: $0.798 to $1.40 in one minute
At 5:50 a.m. it traded at $0.717, and at 5:52 at $0.798, both on a dozen or so shares. Then the 5:54 minute opened at $0.798 and closed at $1.40 on 123,350 shares.
It didn't hold. The next minute, 5:55, traded 376,687 shares and dipped to $1.12 before closing at $1.35.
It bounced back to $1.36 at 6:01, still under $1.40. By 6:05 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (2.69 million). The 6:05 candle alone ran from $1.13 down to $0.86 on 643,218 shares. At 6:06 it touched $0.81.
The second wave and the bid at $1.12
From $0.78 at 6:20 a.m. it climbed again. It crossed $1.00 at 6:30 and reached a high of $1.31 at 6:49 a.m. That is below the $1.40 top.
Level 2 shows what was under it. From 6:52 a.m., someone was bidding for stock at exactly $1.12.
Stop It's 6:53. RUBI is at $1.15, down from $1.31 at 6:49. A bid is sitting at $1.12, just below the price. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 6:53 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 6:50 a.m. ET.
Here's what happened. From 6:53:25, shares traded at exactly $1.12. In about 22 seconds, 63,400 shares changed hands there, and at 6:53:48 the wall was gone. The bid peaked at 60,927 shares, 2.3% of the float. The 6:54 candle then fell to $1.03. The 7:00 minute traded down to $0.9465. By the 9:30 open, 13.89 million shares had traded before the bell, about five times the float.
Back to the previous close, then an 8:30 headline
It kept sliding. Sell sweeps hit the book at 7:23 (27,235 shares) and 7:26 (48,070 shares). At 7:30 it touched $0.6879, under the $0.70 close. Then it went quiet, mostly between $0.71 and $0.75 through 8:29.
At 8:30 a.m. GlobeNewsWire ran: “Rubico Announces Closing of the Acquisition of Additional Newbuilding MR Tanker.” In that minute it traded between $0.7381 and $0.7802 on 54,908 shares. It stayed in about a $0.75 to $0.82 range into the open.
The open at 9:30 was $0.755, up 8% from the previous close and 46% under the $1.40 high. The pre-market spike was already over before the first regular-session trade.
The bid at $0.59
After a slide that began at 9:42, there was a large ask wall at $0.7825, first seen at 9:42:13. It was still sitting above the price as the slide went on. Below the price, someone was bidding at exactly $0.59 from 10:10. That bid was pulled at 10:24:18 and came back at 10:25:23.
Stop It's 10:26. RUBI is at $0.62, down from $0.70 at 10:21. A big bid has shown up at $0.59, just under the price. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:26 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:23 a.m. ET.
Here's what happened. The bid peaked at 203,439 shares at 10:27:57, 7.6% of the float. At 10:28:22 a sell sweep of 135,653 shares went through $0.5905 to $0.59. In under a second, 134,545 shares traded at exactly $0.59 and the wall was gone. It wasn't pulled. Sellers hit it.
The 10:28 minute traded 277,224 shares and hit $0.58, the low of the day. It held $0.58 at 10:30 and 10:31, then bounced to $0.64 by 10:35.
The rest of the day and after hours
It drifted between about $0.64 and $0.68 for the afternoon on thin volume. A 50,000-share ask wall at $0.6998 showed from 11:01 and was pulled at 11:25. The $0.7825 ask wall was pulled at 11:35:31, and in the same second an 81,799-share wall appeared at $0.7803 and stayed until 1:00:40 p.m. Price never got near either wall. A 19,440-share print at $0.638 at 11:31 was the last big print of the day.
It closed at $0.654, 53% under the $1.40 high. The regular session traded 2.04 million shares. For the whole day, 16.22 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 6 times, at about 53 times its normal volume. 86% of that came before the open.
After the close, at 4:04 p.m., the company filed a 6-K (a foreign company's current report). At 4:06 p.m. it filed a 424B3 (a prospectus supplement). After-hours volume was 285,386 shares, and the last trade of the night was at $0.63.
What to take from it
- A pre-market spike can be over before the open. $1.40 came at 5:54 a.m. The open was $0.755, and the close was $0.654.
- A big bid is not a floor. Levels with 60,000 and 203,439 shares on the bid were eaten in 22 seconds and in under a second.
- Float turnover tells part of the story. More shares than the float had traded by 6:05 a.m., and 86% of the day's volume came before the bell.
Why it ran
News and SEC filings for RUBI published between the previous session's close and the first minute RUBI traded 20% above it, at 4:12 a.m. ET, newest first, from the same feeds the replay shows.
No news found before the move.
How it traded
| Time (ET) | What happened | Watch it |
|---|---|---|
| 4:12 a.m. | First trade 20% above the previous close of 0.7000 | |
| 5:54 a.m. | Pre-market high, 1.40 | |
| 5:54 a.m. | High of the day to the close, 1.40 | |
| 6:05 a.m. | Volume since 4:00 a.m. passes the whole float, 2.69 million shares | |
| 9:30 a.m. | The open: 0.7550, up 7.9% from the previous close | |
| 3:59 p.m. | Last trade before the 4:00 p.m. close, 0.6540, 53.3% below the high |
The shape is a fixed rule, not a judgement: gapped 10% or more at the open, ran 10% or more from the open to the high, and faded if it gave back 30% or more of that move by the close.
