The day, step by step
- Small cap
- Momentum
- Main move: pre-market, 4:00 a.m.
- News: Accesswire headlines
- Gap-down open
- Bid wall
- Faded to the close
The day before
On October 1, SMX traded between $6.15 and $8.83. The official close was $6.16. Three Accesswire headlines came out that day, at 7:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. They were about gold, "Made in America" and media coverage of its technology.
The last bar of the day was at $8.53, well above the close.
Pre-market: $10.50 in the first minute
The first trades on the 2nd were at $8.04, already above the $6.16 close. In that same 4:00 a.m. minute it hit $10.50, the high so far, 70% above the close. It then closed the minute at $9.08. 41,652 shares traded in that minute.
The spike did not hold. The 4:02 minute reached $9.36, and by 4:04 the stock was trading around $7.47. By 4:10 it had touched $7.06, and it kept sliding. At 4:36 it fell below the $6.16 close, to $6.14.
From 5:00 a.m. until the open it mostly stayed between $5.20 and $5.83, and trading was thin. At 7:00 a.m. Accesswire ran: “The Age of Parity Has a Passport; SMX Has the Stamp”. The 7:00 minute traded between $5.53 and $5.74. At 7:14 it was at $5.36. 646,505 shares traded before the bell, close to the 758,975-share float.
The open
It opened at $5.25, down 15% from the previous close. The stock fell right away. The 9:31 minute dropped to $4.68 on 21,293 shares, and by 9:34 it had touched $4.38.
It bounced to $5.09 in the 9:35 minute, then faded again. By 9:42 a.m., counting pre-market, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (758,975). From 9:37 to 9:54 it sat around $4.54 to $4.70.
The bid at $3.45
At 9:33:32 a bid for 41,430 shares showed up at $3.39, well under the price. It was pulled at 9:36:15. Then, from 9:38 a.m. on, a large bid sat at exactly $3.45. It peaked at 42,608 shares at 11:41 a.m., about 6% of the float.
The stock kept sinking toward it. It was at $4.37 at 10:30 a.m., when a second headline came out: “The Age of Parity Makes Affordability Real”. By 10:40 it was at $4.11. In the 11:29 minute it dropped to $3.80, and at 11:33 it hit $3.62, the low since the open. That is still above the $3.45 bid, and the bid did not trade.
Stop It's 12:09. SMX is at $3.74. A large bid has sat at $3.45 since 9:38 (it peaked at 42,608 shares at 11:41) and is still on the book. The stock is up from the $3.62 low. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 12:09 p.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 12:06 p.m. ET.
Here's what happened. At 12:09:08 the bid was pulled. The size left the book without trading there. The price did not collapse. The stock held around $3.75. At 12:10:29 a new bid appeared at $3.50, and it grew to 42,713 shares by 3:25 p.m. The stock did not trade down to it.
The rest of the day
The afternoon was quiet. It traded mostly between $3.75 and $3.90. A third Accesswire headline came out at 2:00 p.m. (“SMX: The Age of Parity is Permanent…”), and the stock was at $3.86. The last regular-session bar closed at $3.82, 64% under the $10.50 high. That high came before the bell, at 4:00 a.m., and was 100% above the $5.25 open.
After hours, 79,096 shares traded. The last trade of the extended session was at $3.82.
602,892 shares traded in the regular session, about 0.8 times the float, and 1.33 million over the whole day, about 1.75 times the float. Relative volume was about 46 times normal. Normal volume is tiny: about 29,000 shares a day.
What to take from it
- A spike in the first minute of pre-market can be gone in ten. SMX hit $10.50 at 4:00 a.m. and touched $7.06 by 4:10.
- A large bid under the price is not a floor. The 42,608-share bid at $3.45 was pulled without trading, and a new one appeared at $3.50.
- Being above the previous close early did not decide the day. The stock opened 15% below it and closed at $3.82, 64% under the high.
Why it ran
News and SEC filings for SMX published between the previous session's close and the first minute SMX traded 20% above it, at 4:00 a.m. ET, newest first, from the same feeds the replay shows.
No news found before the move.
How it traded
| Time (ET) | What happened | Watch it |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00 a.m. | First trade 20% above the previous close of 6.16 | |
| 4:00 a.m. | Pre-market high, 10.50 | |
| 4:00 a.m. | High of the day to the close, 10.50 | |
| 9:30 a.m. | The open: 5.25, down 14.8% from the previous close | |
| 9:42 a.m. | Volume since 4:00 a.m. passes the whole float, 758,975 shares | |
| 3:59 p.m. | Last trade before the 4:00 p.m. close, 3.81, 63.7% below the high |
The shape is a fixed rule, not a judgement: gapped 10% or more at the open, ran 10% or more from the open to the high, and faded if it gave back 30% or more of that move by the close.
The day in numbers
- Volume, from the one-minute bars: 646,505 shares before the 9:30 a.m. open (49%), 153,280 in the first 30 minutes (12%), and 528,708 in the rest of the day to 8 p.m. (40%).
- Float rotation, the volume since 4 a.m. against the float of 758,975 shares: past it once at 9:42 a.m.
- In our recaps, this is the only day SMX met the small-cap rule.
