The day, step by step

The day before

On October 1, AMOD ranged from $1.12 to $2.06 on 8.45 million shares. The official close was $1.17. After hours the last bar was $1.88.

Pre-market: the float traded by 4:09 a.m.

The first trades on the 2nd were around $2.10, already well above the $1.17 close. By 4:09 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (1.11 million). By 7:16 a.m. that was ten times the float.

It spent the early morning drifting between about $1.82 and $2.24. At 7:01 a.m. volume jumped and it started to climb. It reached $2.74 at 7:57 a.m.

At 8:35 a.m. the company filed an 8-K (a current report). The stock was at $2.66 at the end of that minute. It kept climbing through $3 at about 9:00.

The pre-market high was $3.60 at 9:24 a.m. 43.58 million shares traded before the bell.

Walls on the way up

The Level 2 data shows sellers parking big size on the way up. Around 7:50 a.m., walls of about 95,000 shares sat at $2.62 and $2.60. Both were pulled. At 8:09 a.m. a wall of 104,276 shares appeared at $2.50. It was eaten at 8:22 a.m., when 53,489 shares traded at exactly $2.50 over about eight seconds.

These were each roughly 8% to 9% of the float. They did not stop the stock for long.

The wall at $4.00

The open was $3.48. In the first minute it went to $3.88 and came back to $3.59. At 9:32 it closed at $3.97 and then slipped back to $3.51 by 9:36.

This is the part a chart doesn't show you. From 9:17 a.m. on, someone was offering stock at exactly $4.00. By 9:40 a.m. it had grown to about 160,000 shares, about 15% of the float.

Stop It's 9:40. AMOD is at $3.77. About 160,000 shares are offered at $4.00, which is 15% of the float. Would you buy here?

Here's what happened. From 9:40:42 to 9:40:43, 71,239 shares traded at exactly $4.00, in under a second, and the wall was gone. Buyers ate it. The 9:40 minute traded 1.75 million shares and closed at $4.07.

The 9:41 minute ran to $4.56 and at 9:41:37 it was halted (a volatility pause). It reopened at 9:46:37.

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 9:46 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 9:43 a.m. ET.

The reopen began with a single print of 343,886 shares at $4.54. The 9:46 candle then fell to $4.09 and closed at $4.18.

At 9:47 it hit $4.77, the high of the day. It closed that minute at $4.37.

The rest of the day

After a $4.68 high at 9:48, at 10:09 a.m. it pushed to $4.27, another lower high under the $4.77 top. Then it faded. It was $3.57 at 10:29 and $3.08 at 1:50 p.m., the low after the open. It closed at $3.50.

By the close, 34.06 million shares had traded in the regular session. With pre-market that came to 77.64 million, so the float changed hands about 70 times, at 173 times its normal volume.
