The day, step by step

Pre-market: the headline and the first spike

On September 29, PWCM closed at $0.99 on 18,323 shares. The first trade on the 30th was at 4:00 a.m., 1,204 shares at $1.04, already above that close. Then it went quiet, with only single-share prints at 4:36 and 5:10. At 7:00 a.m. 1,024 shares traded at $0.98.

At 8:30 a.m. GlobeNewsWire ran: “PowerCompute Repays Arch Bitcoin-Backed Facility, Releases All Bitcoin Collateral and Achieves Approximately 94% Reduction in Total Debt.” The company also filed an 8-K at 8:30.

The stock traded at $1.01 in the 8:30 minute and reached $1.10 by 8:33. By 8:45 it was back at $0.98, below where it started. Volume was thin. The 8:34 minute was the busiest of the stretch, at 5,366 shares.

It woke up again at 9:23 a.m. at $1.03. The pre-market high was $1.11 at 9:25 a.m. In total 26,866 shares traded before the bell.

The open: 9:30 to 9:55

It opened at $1.06, up 7% from the previous close. From 9:30 to 9:55 it stayed between $1.05 and $1.20. Most minutes traded under 10,000 shares.

The busiest minute in that stretch was 9:42, with 48,759 shares. A sell order of 31,858 shares went through three price levels, from $1.16 to $1.13. The stock was back near $1.16 a minute later. At 9:55 only 100 shares traded.

The wall at $1.49

The 9:56 candle ran from just over $1.16 to $1.30 on 46,582 shares. Then the order book shows something the chart doesn't.

Stop It's 9:57. PWCM is at $1.30, up from $1.16 two minutes ago. A large block of shares has just appeared offered at $1.49. Would you buy here?

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 9:57 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 9:54 a.m. ET.

From 9:56:33, someone was offering stock at exactly $1.49. It peaked at 76,446 shares at 9:57:33, which is 3.2% of the 2.41-million-share float.

The 9:57 minute traded 528,334 shares, nearly 20 times the whole pre-market. A 13,208-share buy at 9:57:12 swept five levels, from $1.39 to $1.43. The regular-session high so far was $1.49 at 9:57, the same price as the wall.

Then it turned. The 9:58 candle opened at $1.47 and closed at $1.13. At 9:58:21 a 15,027-share sell went through six levels, from $1.40 to $1.35. The wall was gone from the book at 9:58:53.

The halt and the bid at $0.95

At 9:58:52 it was halted (a volatility pause), with the last trade at $1.13. The halt lasted five minutes.

There was also a bid below the market. From 9:30:02, someone was bidding for stock at exactly $0.95, about four cents under the previous close. It peaked at 26,374 shares at 9:59:10, 1.1% of the float. It sat there through the whole run and the halt.

It reopened at 10:03:52 at $1.07, 5% below where it stopped. The first print was 50,680 shares, one trade on Nasdaq. That is nearly twice the 26,866 shares that traded in the whole pre-market.

Stop It's 10:04. PWCM reopened a minute ago at $1.07 and is at $1.06, down from $1.49 seven minutes ago. The bid of about 26,000 shares at $0.95 that sat there since the open has just disappeared. Would you buy the dip?

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:04 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:01 a.m. ET.

Here's what happened. At 10:03:54 the $0.95 bid was pulled. Within a minute the price went through that level. At 10:04:47 an 11,544-share sell went through 11 levels, from $0.9083 to $0.8814. The 10:04 candle low was $0.87, down 42% from $1.49. It closed that minute at $0.91.

The rest of the regular session

It stayed well below the top for the rest of the session. From 10:05 to the 10:25 minute it traded mostly between about $0.90 and $0.96. A bid appeared at $0.83 from 11:13, peaking at 22,650 shares at 11:25. The stock stayed above it.

By 11:34 it was back at $1.00. Midday it crept along between about $1.00 and $1.08, on small volume. At 3:55 p.m. it pushed to $1.15, a lower high under the $1.49 top. That minute traded 21,323 shares.

Into the close it traded at $1.11 in the 3:59 minute and $1.13 in the 4:00 minute, about 24% under the $1.49 high. By the close, 2.32 million shares had traded, nearly the whole float of 2.41 million.

After hours: a bigger spike

After the close it dipped to $1.03 at 4:22 p.m. Then it drifted up, and by 6:13 p.m. more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (2.41 million), counting the full day.

From 6:02 p.m. it ran harder. The 6:16 p.m. minute alone traded 152,041 shares. It hit $1.52 in the 6:19 p.m. minute, up 48% from $1.03 and above the $1.49 regular-session high. There was no new headline in our data for this move.

It gave a lot of that back too. It was $1.35 at the end of the 6:23 p.m. minute and $1.05 at the last bar of the evening, 7:59 p.m. After hours, 1.91 million shares traded. For the whole day it was 4.26 million shares, or 74 times its normal volume.
