The day before
On September 21, GRML opened at $5.01 and reached $11.69. It closed at $9.42. About 93.2 million shares traded, roughly 21 times the 4.36-million-share float.
The news was out that day. At 4:47 a.m. CNBC ran: “U.S.-listed Greenland stocks surge after Trump agrees security deal with Denmark.” At 9:30 a.m. GlobeNewsWire ran a release saying Greenland Mines more than doubled its control position in the Sarfartoq rare earth magnet district. At 3:46 p.m. Benzinga ran: “Greenland Stocks Explode After Trump's Denmark Deal — GRML Up 245%.” After hours the last bar was $10.94.
Pre-market: the float traded by 6:43 a.m.
The first trades on the 22nd were around $9.80, above the $9.42 close. That $9.75 low at 4:00 a.m. was the low so far. At 4:13 a.m. it spiked to $12.10 on 255,054 shares in one minute. The next minute it closed at $11.02.
Then it went quiet. From about 4:36 to 6:18 a.m. it stayed between $10.11 and $10.85, often on a few thousand shares a minute.
The run came from $10.43 at 6:09 a.m. to $13.36 at 6:42 a.m., up 28%. By 6:43 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (4.36 million).
After a dip to $11.99 at 6:54 a.m., it went to the pre-market high, $14.22 at 7:17 a.m. 13.00 million shares traded before the bell, about three times the float.
The open: two halts in ten minutes
It opened at $13.68, up 45% from the previous close. The opening print was 184,544 shares at $13.73 at 9:30:00. Three seconds later a buy order swept 60,779 shares from $14.00 to $14.10 across 11 price levels. The 9:30 minute alone traded 905,762 shares and closed at $15.87.
At 9:31:06 it was halted (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $15.87. Level 2 showed walls at that price on both sides. A bid wall at $15.87 peaked at 116,848 shares at 9:31:00 (2.7% of the float), six seconds before the halt, and was pulled at 9:36:07. An ask wall at $15.87 peaked at 86,530 shares at 9:33:56, during the halt, and was pulled at 10:44:44.
It reopened at 9:36:06 with a 218,938-share print at $15.75, below where it stopped. It ran to $15.88, up 16% from the open.
At 9:36:33 it was halted again, 27 seconds after the reopen, with the last trade at $14.18. That was 11% below the $15.88 high. An ask wall at $14.18, first seen at 9:36:19, peaked at 187,800 shares (4.3% of the float) as the halt began.
It reopened at 9:41:33 at $13.88 on an 83,672-share print, 2% below where it stopped. The $14.18 wall was pulled at 9:41:53. A 5,000-share buy one second after that reopen would have averaged $13.87 against $13.80 on screen, $330 more.
After a bounce to $14.16 at 9:43, it fell to $12.61 at 9:53 a.m., down 21% from $15.88. From 9:54 to 10:45 a.m. it stayed between $12.61 and $15.00.
Late morning: back above $15
Stop It's 10:49. GRML is at $15.37, up from $13.94 at 10:37. It was halted twice at the open and has been at or below $15.60 for the last few minutes. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:49 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:46 a.m. ET.
The 10:49 minute traded 783,797 shares and closed at $16.52. At 10:49:14 a buy order swept 70,639 shares from $15.81 to $16.10 across 29 levels. In the 10:50 minute it reached $17.18.
At 10:50:36 it was halted (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $17.18. A bid wall at $17.18, first seen at 10:50:22, peaked at 104,265 shares (2.4% of the float) six seconds later. It reopened at 10:55:36 at $17.95 on a 173,426-share print, 4% above where it stopped.
In that same minute it hit $18.15, the high so far. That was up 93% from the $9.42 previous close.
Stop It's 10:56. GRML is at $17.73, just under the $18.15 high set in the 10:55 minute. Below, a bid wall at $17.18 peaked at 104,265 shares. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:56 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:53 a.m. ET.
At 10:56:14 a sell order swept 52,309 shares from $17.25 to $16.62 across 55 levels. In that same second 12,294 shares traded at exactly $17.18, and the bid wall was gone by 10:56:15. At 10:56:47 it was halted again with the last trade at $15.87. That was $1.86 below the $17.73 open of the minute.
An ask wall at $15.87, first seen at 10:56:34, peaked at 103,548 shares at 10:56:47. It reopened at 11:01:47 at $15.50 on a 102,632-share print, 2% below where it stopped.
Then it fell to $14.12 at 11:02 a.m., down 22% from $18.15.
A lower high, a headline, and the $14.00 bid
It came back once more. The 11:17 minute traded 533,863 shares and reached $17.81. At 11:19 a.m. it pushed to $18.00, a lower high under the $18.15 top. At 11:36 a sell order swept 80,477 shares from $17.00 to $16.50 across 51 levels, and the minute hit $15.50.
At 12:00 p.m. GlobeNewsWire ran: “Greenland Mines Applauds Formal Signing of U.S.-Denmark-Greenland Security Agreement at United Nations”. The 12:00 minute traded between $15.71 and $15.91. A push to $16.78 at 1:08 p.m. was the high of the afternoon.
Here is the part a chart doesn't show. A bid wall at exactly $14.00 was first seen at 10:41 a.m. It grew until it peaked at 115,341 shares at 12:13 p.m., 2.6% of the float. It was eaten at 1:58:41 p.m., after 28,784 shares traded at exactly $14.00.
What to take from it
- A bid wall that holds for hours is still not a floor. The 115,341-share bid at $14.00 was first seen at 10:41 a.m. and grew until 12:13 p.m. It was eaten at 1:58 p.m. after 28,784 shares traded at exactly $14.00.
- Halts and reopens can change the fill more than the screen suggests. At the 9:36 reopen, a 5,000-share buy averaged $15.77, which was $1,333 more than the screen showed. At the 11:01 reopen, the same order averaged $15.57, only $5 more.
- Day two of a news runner can run higher than day one, and still fade. Day one reached $11.69 and closed at $9.42. Day two hit $18.15, then made a lower high of $18.00 and closed at $14.15.
