Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 8:00 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 7:57 a.m. ET.
Here is what happened. The 8:01 minute fell from $0.7863 to a low of $0.5918, on 625,593 shares. A 16,917-share print at $0.7647 hit the ask at 8:01:09. It kept sliding. The low of the day was $0.5265 at 8:08 a.m., about 51% below the high from twelve minutes earlier. 5.71 million shares traded before the bell, about 70% of the float.
The 9:28 headline and the open
At 9:28 a.m. PRNewsWire ran: “Datasea Expands into China's Trillion-RMB Silver Economy Through Strategic Cooperation in AI Elderly Care Robots”. Volume picked up that minute (36,873 shares, after minutes of a few hundred) and the stock reached $0.654 at 9:29.
The stock sagged through the morning.
At 9:38 a sell sweep of 23,912 shares went from $0.62 to $0.6138, and the minute low was $0.5922 on 62,999 shares. A 17,000-share print hit the bid at $0.5731 at 9:44:14. The low after the open was $0.5313 at 9:53, on 79,063 shares.
Midday bounce, afternoon fade
From about 11:42 it climbed. A 25,000-share print at $0.73 hit the ask at 11:50:44. The regular-session high came at $0.798 at 12:10 p.m., well under the pre-market high of $1.08.
After that it slid. It dipped to $0.6066 at 1:23 p.m. and $0.6178 at 1:46 p.m. and held a narrow range around $0.62 to $0.67 into the afternoon.
The Level 2 data shows an ask wall at $0.85 (peak 48,562 shares at 1:08 p.m.) and another at $0.83 (peak 53,192 shares at 3:57 p.m.). Each was about 0.6% to 0.7% of the float and sat well above the price when it appeared.
It closed the regular session at $0.65, 40% under the $1.08 high of the day. 2.0 million shares traded in the regular session, a quarter of the float.
After hours: a second spike
At 4:37 p.m. it was still near $0.65. The 4:38 minute went to $0.8897, the 4:39 minute traded 483,251 shares, and at 4:40 it hit $0.98. By 4:39, more shares had traded on the day than exist in the whole float (8.19 million).
It then gave back all of that spike, down to $0.6455 at 4:50, before running again. At 5:13 p.m. it reached $1.03, the after-hours high, 58% above the regular-session close, and then pulled back to $0.8704 a minute later.
After hours, 8.73 million shares traded. For the whole day, 16.45 million shares traded: the float changed hands about twice, and relative volume was about 2,300 times normal.
What to take from it
- A near-empty stock can spike on a few minutes of volume and give it all back just as fast. DTSS went from $0.69 to $1.08 in seven minutes, then fell to $0.5265 within the next 12.
- A catalyst headline is not a guarantee. The 9:28 news came after the pre-market spike was already over, and the stock opened under the previous close.
- Chasing a spike costs more than the screen says. At the $1.08 high, the order that showed $1.02 would have averaged $1.04, with only 652 shares offered at the screen price.
Why it ran
News and SEC filings for DTSS published between the previous session's close and the first minute DTSS traded 20% above it, at 7:55 a.m. ET, newest first, from the same feeds the replay shows.
No news found before the move.
How it traded
Intraday run. It opened down 1.8% at 0.6472, then ran from the open to the high of 0.7980 in 160 minutes.
| Time (ET) | What happened | Watch it |
|---|---|---|
| 7:55 a.m. | First trade 20% above the previous close of 0.6593 | |
| 7:56 a.m. | Pre-market high, 1.08 | |
| 7:56 a.m. | High of the day to the close, 1.08 | |
| 9:30 a.m. | The open: 0.6472, down 1.8% from the previous close | |
| 3:59 p.m. | Last trade before the 4:00 p.m. close, 0.6493, 39.9% below the high | |
| 4:39 p.m. | Volume since 4:00 a.m. passes the whole float, 8.19 million shares |
The shape is a fixed rule, not a judgement: gapped 10% or more at the open, ran 10% or more from the open to the high, and faded if it gave back 30% or more of that move by the close.
