The day, step by step

The day before

On September 14, SUGP traded between $0.62 and $0.73 on 320,870 shares.

Pre-market: the float traded by 8:02 a.m.

From 4:00 to 8:00 a.m., fewer than 10,000 shares traded in total, mostly between $0.70 and $0.72. Then the news came.

At 8:00 a.m. PRNewsWire ran: “SU Group Holdings Limited Announces Proposed Acquisition of KM Safety Solution Company Limited”. At 8:01 it ran a second headline: “SU Group Secures Exclusive Distribution Rights for Portable X-Ray System in Hong Kong and Macau”.

From $0.76 at 8:00 a.m. it ran to $0.96 at 8:03 a.m., up 27%. By 8:02 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (1.05 million). The 8:02 minute alone was 987,871 shares.

At 8:05 and again at 8:06 the company filed a 6-K (a foreign company's current report). The stock was choppy through both minutes. The 8:05 candle ran from $0.98 down to $0.85.

At 8:10 it traded through $1.00 for the first time. From $0.88 at 8:06 it ran to the pre-market high, $1.19 at 8:11 a.m., on 1.4 million shares in that one minute. By 8:16 a.m. the volume was ten times the float.

It didn't hold. A sell order swept $1.01 down to $0.9993 across six levels at 8:21:16 (87,741 shares), and by 8:22 the low was $0.93. From $0.95 at 8:24 it climbed again to $1.17 at 8:30 a.m., up 23%. At 8:30:39 a buy order for 115,262 shares went through five levels, from $1.10 to $1.14.

At 8:50 a bid wall at $1.03 gave way. It had been on the book since 8:43 and peaked at 135,221 shares. In 5.7 seconds, 107,032 shares traded at exactly $1.03. The 8:50 candle dipped to $0.9953 and closed at $1.03. By the bell, 31.54 million shares had traded.

The open and the walls above it

SUGP opened at $1.05, up 48% from the $0.71 previous close. The opening print was 91,249 shares at $1.05.

This is the part a chart doesn't show you. Stock was stacked on the ask above the price. An ask wall at $1.20 had been on the book since 8:05. The pre-market high, $1.19, was a cent under it. A second ask wall at $1.15 appeared at 8:49. By 9:39 the $1.20 wall had grown to 165,122 shares, about 16% of the float. The $1.15 wall peaked at 140,491 shares at 9:43.

There was a bid wall too, at $1.00. It peaked at 137,733 shares at 9:30 and broke at 9:32:51. In 2.8 seconds, 83,478 shares traded at exactly $1.00. The 9:32 candle hit $0.97, and by 9:35 it was back to $1.15.

From $1.04 at 9:42 it pushed up toward the walls.

Stop It's 9:44. SUGP is at $1.13. Just above, a large ask wall sits at $1.15 (it peaked near 140,000 shares a minute ago), and another sits at $1.20. Would you buy here?
