8:00: the headline

Stop It's 8:01. XAIR is at $5.03. The previous close was $4.48, and a news headline came out a minute ago. Would you buy here?

Here's what happened. The 8:01 minute ran to $6.53 on 473,266 shares. At 8:01:45 one buy order swept 11,525 shares from $6.00 to $6.26 across 21 price levels. Another at 8:02:04 took 10,575 shares from $6.43 to $6.48.

By the end of 8:02, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (904,175). The stock hit $6.93, the high so far, in the 8:02 minute. That was up 55% from the $4.48 close. The same minute also went down to $6.00.

The walls above, and the lower high

This is the part a chart doesn't show you. After the top, large blocks of stock were offered above the price, one after another. Each was about 2.6% to 3.2% of the float.

An ask wall appeared at $6.35 at 8:03:53 and peaked at 23,717 shares. It was pulled at 8:05:06. One at $7.12 appeared at 8:04:15, peaked at 24,574 shares at 8:10:13, and was pulled at 8:10:37. One at $6.51 appeared at 8:05:50, peaked at 28,601 shares, and was pulled at 8:07:45. One at $6.38 appeared at 8:08:48, peaked at 24,864 shares, and was pulled at 8:10:15.

At 8:03:18 a buy swept 15,600 shares from $6.19 to $6.30. The price then fell to $5.55 by 8:05 and climbed again. At 8:09:23 a 18,036-share sell swept down from $6.17 to $6.00. At 8:10:07 a buy of 10,090 shares went from $6.22 to $6.29. At 8:10 the stock pushed to $6.36, a lower high under the $6.93 top.

Then, at 8:10:37, a new ask wall appeared at $7.46, the same second the $7.12 wall was pulled.

Stop It's 8:11. XAIR is at $6.07. It made a high of $6.36 a minute ago, below the $6.93 top. A new ask wall just appeared at $7.46. Would you buy here?

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 8:11 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 8:08 a.m. ET.

Here's what happened. The 8:11 minute was the heaviest since 8:02, with 347,461 shares. It fell to $4.99 and closed at $5.01. That was more than a dollar lost in one minute. It never got back above $5.10 after that.

The fade, the open and the close

It drifted down from there: $4.65 at 8:20, $4.46 at 8:44. By 9:29 it was back near $4.50, right around the previous close. 3.76 million shares traded before the bell.

The open was $4.52, up 1% from the previous close. At 9:30:00 a single print of 10,273 shares went through at $4.52 on Nasdaq. The stock then slid to $4.12 by 9:51.

At 10:08:12 a buy of 13,587 shares swept from $4.39 to $4.48 across 9 levels. It didn't lead anywhere: the stock stayed in the $4.30s for much of the late morning.

In the afternoon it dipped to $4.00 at 12:35. At 1:06 p.m. one wild minute (34,451 shares) swung between $3.85 and $4.13. $3.85 was the low of the day. Its last regular-session minute (3:59 p.m.) closed at $3.90.

For the whole day, 4.34 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 4.8 times, at about 56 times its normal volume (about 78,000 shares a day). Only 546,153 of those traded between 9:30 and 4:00. The rest came before the open and after the close.
