The bid that kept getting pulled
This is the part a chart doesn't show you.
From 11:05 a.m. on, a bid of about 35,000 shares kept appearing far below the market. That is about 3.8% to 3.9% of the float each time. It first sat at $9.22, when the stock was near $12.40. The bid was far from the price. At 11:54:43 a sell order for 21,078 shares went through 42 price levels, from $11.45 to $11.02. The 11:54 candle fell to $10.81. It slid to $10.37 by 11:59.
The $9.13 bid peaked at 35,576 shares at 11:59 a.m. and was pulled at 12:09:47 p.m., with the stock still well above it. More followed at $9.07 (pulled at 12:33), $9.04 (pulled at 12:35) and $8.73 (pulled at 12:50). While each one was up, the price never got down to it.
The rest of the day
It kept fading: $9.53 at 12:33 p.m. A bounce took it back to $11.85 at 12:53, then it rolled over again. A 22,110-share sell sweep at 3:35 p.m. ran from $7.85 to $7.66. At 3:51 p.m. a 28,496-share sell sweep ran from $6.29 to $5.97. The low was $5.42 at 3:58 p.m. It closed at $5.50.
From 4 a.m. to the close, 15.60 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 17 times, at about 5 times its normal volume. 14.24 million of that traded in the regular session.
After hours it traded between $5.48 and $7.14, with the high at 4:16 p.m. 1.59 million shares traded after the close.
What to take from it
- After the top, the highs kept stepping lower. $14.00 at 10:58 a.m., $13.12 at 11:02, then $12.70 at 11:30 a.m. after an 11:16 dip to $11.32.
- Both fills here cost more than the screen showed: $1,399 over at the reopen and $311 over at the high.
- The roughly 35,000-share bids far below the price were pulled six times, and the stock closed at $5.50, 61% below the $14.00 high.

How it traded
Gap, run and fade. It gapped up 26.0% to 7.21 at the open, ran from the open to the high of 14.00 in 88 minutes through a halt, then gave back 125% of that move by 4:00 p.m., trading at 5.50.
| Time (ET) | What happened | Watch it |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00 a.m. | First trade 20% above the previous close of 5.72 | |
| 8:53 a.m. | Pre-market high, 8.74 | |
| 8:53 a.m. | Volume since 4:00 a.m. passes the whole float, 914,205 shares | |
| 9:30 a.m. | The open: 7.21, up 26.0% from the previous close | |
| 9:42 a.m. | Halted: LULD pause (limit up-limit down). Trading resumes at 9:47 a.m. | |
| 10:58 a.m. | High of the day to the close, 14.00 | |
| 3:59 p.m. | Last trade before the 4:00 p.m. close, 5.50, 60.7% below the high |
The shape is a fixed rule, not a judgement: gapped 10% or more at the open, ran 10% or more from the open to the high, and faded if it gave back 30% or more of that move by the close.
