The day, step by step

Pre-market: thin and choppy

The official close on August 10 was $2.31. The first trades on the 11th were at $2.51, already above that.

The pre-market high was $2.83 at 9:05 a.m. 23,860 shares traded before the bell. That is thin for a stock with a float of 807,125 shares.

The open and the first halt

It opened at $2.75, up 19% from the previous close. The first minute dipped to $2.60. Then it spent ten minutes between about $2.62 and $2.83.

At 9:40 it woke up. The minute opened at $2.87 and reached $3.44 on 29,158 shares. At 9:41:14 it was halted (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $3.44.

The halt lasted 34 minutes. It reopened at 10:15:57 at $4.50, 31% above where it stopped. A 71,270-share print went through at $4.50 on the reopen.

The reopen and the $5.00 wall

The 10:16 minute reached $4.89 and traded 439,064 shares. By 10:17 more shares had traded on the day than exist in the whole float. Then it fell to $3.53 at 10:20.

It came back to $5.19 at 10:24, then fell to $4.10 at 10:29. The pattern was big swings, up and down, on heavy volume. By 11:04 the day's volume was about ten times the float.

The Level 2 book showed something the chart did not. From 10:30 on, someone was offering stock at exactly $5.00. It grew to 38,065 shares at 11:28, about 5% of the float. Earlier, at 10:25, walls of about 50,000 shares had shown at $5.87 and $6.00.

Under the wall the stock kept chopping. It dipped to $3.63 at 10:54 and sat near $4 for a long stretch. At 11:28 it jumped from $3.95 to $4.70 in one minute on 492,930 shares. Then it settled back near $4.40.

Stop It's 11:34. MSGY is at $4.44. Just above, a wall that peaked near 38,000 shares sits at $5.00. Would you buy here?

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 11:34 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 11:31 a.m. ET.

Here's what happened. At 11:34:31, 24,060 shares traded at exactly $5.00 in under a second and the wall was gone. It wasn't pulled. Buyers ate it. Two sweeps hit the book in that same second, one of 52,780 shares and one of 32,478.

The second halt and the top

At 11:34:50 it was halted again (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $5.43. It reopened at 11:39:50 at $5.25, 3% below where it stopped. A 43,329-share print crossed at $5.25.

From there it ran to $5.72 in the 11:39 minute. At 11:41 it hit $5.85, the high of the day. In that same minute it traded as low as $4.82 and closed it at $5.06.

The rest of the day

It came back once more. At 11:46 it pushed to $5.77, a lower high under $5.85. Within the minute it was down to $4.74.

From there it faded: $4.78 at 11:53, $4.09 at 12:28, $3.53 at 1:29 p.m., and $3.51 at the close, 40% below the high.

By the close, 17.38 million shares had traded in the regular session. The float changed hands about 22 times, at 249 times its normal volume. Normal is about 71,000 shares a day.

After hours it traded between $3.07 and $4.05. The high came at 7:51 p.m.
