The drop was fast. It hit $4.87 at 4:15 a.m., down 31% from $7.02. It then held a range of roughly $5.00 to $5.65 for the next ten minutes.
It pushed higher again. At 5:28 a.m. it reached $6.49, a lower high under the $7.02 top, and it faded again. 5.40 million shares traded before the bell.
The wall at $5.29
These walls come from the Level 2 order book, not the price chart.
At 6:46 a.m. the stock was sliding and someone was offering a lot of stock at $5.39. That wall peaked at 50,506 shares and was pulled at 6:48:14. At 6:48:38 a new wall appeared at $5.29. It grew quickly and was still there going into 6:49.
Stop It's 6:49. ELPW is at $5.28, down from $5.61 four minutes ago. A large ask wall has been sitting at $5.29 since 6:48. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 6:49 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 6:46 a.m. ET.
Here's what happened. From 6:49:20 shares traded at $5.29. At 6:50:00 one buy order of 16,041 shares swept $5.29 to $5.32 across four price levels. In 104.2 seconds, 43,577 shares traded at exactly $5.29 and the wall was gone at 6:51:05. It wasn't pulled. Buyers ate it.
The 6:51 minute reached $5.37 and closed there, and the stock stayed between about $5.25 and $5.50 until 7:00. At 7:01 it dropped, and by the end of that minute it was at $5.06.
The open and the halt
From 7:02 a.m. it drifted down to the low $4.60s by 8:27 and climbed back to about $5.00 by 9:00. It opened at $5.13, up 28% from the previous close.
The first minutes were choppy. It dipped to $4.86 at 9:31, then pushed up. The regular-session high so far, $5.56, came at 9:41. At 9:44 it fell to $4.87.
At 9:45:57 it was halted (a volatility pause). The last trade was $4.77.
Stop It's 9:50. ELPW has been halted since 9:45, when it was falling and the last trade was $4.77. The halt is about to end. Would you buy the reopen?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 9:50 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 9:47 a.m. ET.
It reopened at 9:50:57 and bounced right away. By 9:52 it had traded as high as $5.16.
The bounce didn't hold. In the 10:00 minute 52,011 shares traded and the low was $4.38. A new ask wall appeared at $5.74 at 9:59:18 and peaked at 20,610 shares (2.7% of the float) at 10:01:04, well above the price.
The quiet middle and the close
From 10 a.m. the stock traded between about $4.40 and $5.17 for the rest of the morning, with few shares on most minutes. The low after the open was $4.17 at 12:44.
From noon until 3:57 p.m. it stayed between $4.17 and $4.80. Then it pushed up into the close, and in the 3:59 p.m. minute it reached $5.00 on 17,972 shares. It closed at $4.95, 29% below the $7.02 high.
The float changed hands about 8 times: 5.40 million shares traded pre-market and 1.03 million in the regular session, 6.43 million in all through 4:00 p.m. Relative volume was about 21 times normal.
After hours
At 4:45 p.m. the company filed a 6-K (a foreign company's current report). The stock was trading around $4.90 at that minute. By 4:53 p.m. it had reached $5.10, the after-hours high. The last trade of the night, at 7:58 p.m., was $4.70. After hours, 62,432 shares traded.
What to take from it
- After the top, the later push stopped lower. $7.02 at 4:09 a.m., then $6.49 at 5:28 a.m.
- In this halt reopen, the screen price was not what a market order got. A 5,000-share order averaged $1,308 more than the screen price one second after the reopen.
- The float traded through before the open. By 4:11 a.m. more shares had traded than the float holds, and most of the move was gone by the close at $4.95.
