The close and after hours
At 3:08 p.m. it jumped from about $7.48 to $8.27, and it hit $9.09 at 3:15. At 3:42:38 p.m. it was halted for the 15th time, with the last trade at $8.92. That halt lasted until 4:00 p.m. It closed at $8.92, 55% under the $20.00 high of the day. That high came before the bell, at 6:06 a.m., 38% above where it opened.
Pre-market volume was 13.57 million shares. The regular session from 9:30 to 4:00 added 8.06 million. Together, 21.62 million shares traded before the close: the float changed hands about 4.6 times. Relative volume for the day was about 17,800 times normal, and it was halted 15 times.
After hours it reopened at $8.95 at 4:00 p.m. and hit $9.28 in that first minute. Then it fell to $6.00 by 7:58 p.m., down 35% from $9.28. After-hours volume was 462,742 shares.
What to take from it
- A halt can reopen far from where it stopped, and the fill can be worse still. The 9:52 halt stopped at $19.75 and reopened at $15.11. A 5,000-share buy one second later averaged $17.02 against $15.50 on screen.
- A big ask wall can vanish without ever trading. The $15.00 wall peaked near 49,600 shares and was pulled at 10:34:25 with the stock about $2 below it. The $13.00 and $14.00 walls went when price reached them.
- After the top, the next push stopped lower, and after hours kept going. $20.00 at 6:06 a.m., then $19.75 at 9:52 a.m. From $9.28 at 4:00 p.m., it was $6.00 by 7:58 p.m.
