The day before
On August 5, AZI traded between $1.00 and $1.48 and closed at $1.01. Its last bar of that day, which may be after hours, was $1.24. The data has no headline for August 6.
Pre-market: the float traded by 4:29 a.m.
The first trades on the 6th were at $1.21, already above the $1.01 close. It slid to $1.05 by 4:34 a.m.
By 4:29 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (189,452). The float is small, so that happened within the first half hour.
From the $1.05 low it worked up to the pre-market high, $1.34 at 6:37 a.m. That minute traded 107,246 shares, then it gave the move back and was at $1.11 by 6:47. 1.60 million shares traded before the bell.
The open and the run to $2.08
It opened at $1.23, up 22% from the previous close. It then sat around $1.20 to $1.23 for the first few minutes. The low since the open was $1.20 at 9:31.
At 9:35 the volume jumped. That minute went to $1.40 on 119,295 shares. By 9:36 a.m. the day's volume was ten times the float. It hit $1.56 at 9:39 a.m., up 27% from the open, then dropped back to $1.37 at 9:40.
It chopped between about $1.36 and $1.63 for the next 25 minutes. At 10:04 it started again from $1.49. At 10:07 a single buy order went through 13 price levels, $1.91 to $2.03, for 94,850 shares. It traded through $2.00 and hit $2.08.
The halt and the $2.08 wall
At 10:08:08 a.m. it was halted, with the last trade at $2.08. Just before and during the halt, a big bid built at exactly $2.08. It was first seen at 10:07:56 and peaked at 162,399 shares, 85.7% of the float, at 10:08:08.
Stop It's 10:13. AZI has been halted since 10:08, with the last trade at $2.08. When the halt hit, a bid of about 162,000 shares was sitting at $2.08, more than 85% of the float. Would you buy the reopen?

It reopened at 10:13:08 at $2.10, on a single print of 186,776 shares. Ten seconds later sellers hit the bid. A 70,591-share sell order ran from $2.10 to $2.08. At 10:13:19, 42,348 more shares sold from $2.08 down to $1.97. The wall at $2.08 was eaten, not pulled: 46,520 shares traded there in 0.2 seconds. The minute's low was $1.93.
Then it turned. From $1.93 it ran to $2.54 at 10:14 a.m., up 70% from the $1.49 it had at 10:04.
After the reopen
For the next ten minutes it stayed between $1.98 and $2.46. A bid wall at $1.75 appeared at 10:23 and was pulled at 10:24:25. At that second a new bid wall started to build at $2.00.
Stop It's 10:25. AZI is at $2.20, below the $2.54 it hit at 10:14. A large bid wall has built at $2.00. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:25 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:22 a.m. ET.
It went up fast. Buy orders of 30,434 shares at 10:25:35 and 43,883 shares at 10:25:42 pushed it through $2.40 and $2.50. It hit $2.58, the high so far, at 10:25 a.m. By 10:27 it had traded as low as $2.23.
The $2.00 bid held for about seven minutes. Then it was eaten: 29,064 shares traded at exactly $2.00 in 1.9 seconds, at 10:31:37. A $1.50 bid built at 10:32 and was pulled at 10:34. At 10:36 the stock dropped to $1.85, and it fell to $1.78 at 10:37 a.m., down 31% from $2.58.
It came back once more. At 10:39 a.m. it pushed to $1.97, a lower high under the $2.58 top.
The bid at $1.76
A bid at $1.72 was pulled at 10:42:14. At that same second, a new bid started to build at exactly $1.76. It peaked at 105,343 shares at 10:43:45, about 56% of the float. The stock fell toward it: a 30,321-share sell order at 10:43:07 ran from $1.89 to $1.84.
Stop It's 10:45. AZI is at $1.79, down from $2.58 at 10:25. A very large bid, about 56% of the float at its peak, has been sitting at $1.76 since 10:42. Would you buy near it?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:45 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:42 a.m. ET.
Starting at 10:45:35, sellers hit the $1.76 bid. In 21.5 seconds, 98,772 shares traded at exactly $1.76 and the wall was gone. It wasn't pulled. Sellers hit it. The next minute's low was $1.71.
The rest of the day
It kept fading: $1.60 at 10:54 a.m., $1.50 at 11:26 a.m., and $1.31 at 12:39 p.m. By the close it was back to about $1.60, 38% below the high of the day.
By the close, 21.48 million shares had traded: the float changed hands about 113 times. After hours it dropped to $1.40 at 4:05 p.m., climbed to $1.68 by 5:33 p.m., and was at $1.52 at 7:59 p.m.
What to take from it
- After the top, the next push stopped lower. $2.58 at 10:25 a.m., then $1.97 at 10:39 a.m.
- A big bid is not a floor. The $2.08, $2.00 and $1.76 walls were each eaten by sellers, and the bids at $1.75, $1.50 and $1.72 were pulled.
- The reopen from a halt was thin. A 5,000-share buy cost $151 over the screen at 10:13. At the top, with the book deep, the same buy cost nothing extra, but by 10:27 the stock had traded as low as $2.23.
Why it ran
News and SEC filings for AZI published between the previous session's close and the first minute AZI traded 20% above it, at 4:00 a.m. ET, newest first, from the same feeds the replay shows.
No news found before the move.
How it traded
Gap, run and fade. It gapped up 21.8% to 1.23 at the open, ran from the open to the high of 2.58 in 55 minutes through a halt, then gave back 73% of that move by 4:00 p.m., trading at 1.59.
| Time (ET) | What happened | Watch it |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00 a.m. | First trade 20% above the previous close of 1.01 | |
| 4:29 a.m. | Volume since 4:00 a.m. passes the whole float, 189,452 shares | |
| 6:37 a.m. | Pre-market high, 1.34 | |
| 9:30 a.m. | The open: 1.23, up 21.8% from the previous close | |
| 10:08 a.m. | Halted: LULD pause (limit up-limit down). Trading resumes at 10:13 a.m. | |
| 10:25 a.m. | High of the day to the close, 2.58 | |
| 3:59 p.m. | Last trade before the 4:00 p.m. close, 1.59, 38.2% below the high |
The shape is a fixed rule, not a judgement: gapped 10% or more at the open, ran 10% or more from the open to the high, and faded if it gave back 30% or more of that move by the close.
The day in numbers
- Volume, from the one-minute bars: 1.60 million shares before the 9:30 a.m. open (7%), 2.77 million in the first 30 minutes (12%), and 19.07 million in the rest of the day to 8 p.m. (81%).
- Float rotation, the volume since 4 a.m. against the float of 189,452 shares: past it once at 4:29 a.m., twice at 6:05 a.m., three times at 6:36 a.m.
- The halt at 10:08 a.m.: up 40.5% in the 5 minutes into it, reopened at 2.10, up 1.0% from the last trade before it, then up 1.4% over the next 5 minutes.
