The day, step by step

Pre-market and a quiet open

On July 31, FUSE closed at $0.784. No news came out on the 3rd.

Pre-market was almost empty. One share traded, at $0.85 at 7:34 a.m. That was already above the $0.784 close.

The open was $0.85. For the next hour the stock barely moved. Many minutes had no trades at all. At 9:50 it touched $0.95 for a moment. It was near $0.94 at 10:06.

10:19 to 10:31: the stock wakes up

From 10:19 it climbed in small steps: $0.95, then $0.97, then $1.00 at 10:23. Those minutes traded a few thousand shares each.

At 10:30 volume jumped to 13,163 shares. Then the 10:31 minute traded 163,721 shares and ran from $1.02 to $1.29. That is more than the whole session had traded up to then.

The halt and the top

At 10:32 it hit $1.30 and was halted at 10:32:20 (a volatility pause). It reopened at 10:37:20. Right at the reopen, a single trade of 79,575 shares printed at $1.29.

The reopen minute opened at $1.29, ranged from $1.11 to $1.38, and closed at $1.19. It chopped between $1.11 and $1.38 until 10:43.

Then it took off. At 10:44 it went from $1.29 to $1.50. At 10:46 it jumped from $1.47 to $1.74. At 10:48 it hit $1.84, the high so far. That was 135% over the $0.784 close.

The top didn't hold. Within two minutes it traded at $1.56, and the 10:50 minute closed at $1.61.

A lower high and a fast fade

It tried once more. At 10:52 it pushed to $1.75, a lower high under the $1.84 top. Then it slid. The 10:57 minute traded 707,642 shares and fell from $1.50 to $1.35.

In that stretch the data shows several large single orders. At 10:50:40 a buy of 32,833 shares went through $1.60 to $1.62. At 10:53:47 a sell of 33,276 shares went through $1.56 to $1.53. At 10:57:03 a sell of 32,758 shares went through $1.46 to $1.43.

By 11:15, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (10.47 million). From 11:15 to 11:35 it chopped between $1.16 and $1.48.

The wall at $1.40

This is the part a chart doesn't show you.

At 11:29 an ask wall appeared at exactly $1.40. It peaked at 62,950 shares at 11:31, across all exchanges. That's 0.6% of the float. The stock traded between $1.20 and $1.35 under it.

Stop It's 11:36. FUSE is at $1.33. About 62,950 shares were offered at $1.40 at the wall's peak, and it is still sitting just above. Would you buy here?

Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 11:36 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 11:33 a.m. ET.

Trading at $1.40 began at 11:36:41. In 3.6 seconds, 51,939 shares traded at exactly $1.40 and the wall was eaten. The 11:36 minute reached $1.43 and traded 197,657 shares.

The push stalled at $1.43 and the stock was back to $1.36 by 11:38.

The rest of the day

The afternoon was lower and quieter. It was $1.19 at 12:22, $1.03 at 12:28, and it bounced to $1.55 at 2:46 p.m. It never got back near $1.84.

It closed at $1.31, 29% under the high of the day. After hours it traded between $1.20 and $1.40.

By the close, 19.91 million shares had traded: the float changed hands about twice, at about 899 times its normal volume. Normal volume works out to roughly 22,000 to 23,000 shares a day.
