Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 11:51 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 11:48 a.m. ET.
Here's what happened. At 11:51:28 trading at $3.74 began. In 5 seconds, 34,387 shares traded at exactly $3.74 and the bid was gone. It wasn't pulled. It was traded through. Within seven minutes the stock was at $3.06.
The rest of the day
It kept fading: $3.06 at 11:58, then a range between about $3.19 and $4.40. There was a brief push to $4.40 at 1:02 p.m. It closed at $3.62.
By the close, 9.70 million shares had traded: the float changed hands about 6 times, at about 4 times its normal volume.
What to take from it
- A halt can reopen higher or lower than it stopped. The 9:46 halt stopped at $3.95 and reopened at $5.20. The 10:19 halt stopped at $6.24 and reopened at $4.74.
- The seconds after a reopen cost more than the screen says. A 5,000-share buy at 10:24:05 averaged $2,260 over the $4.49 on screen, because only 206 shares were offered.
- A big bid is a level, not a floor. The $3.74 bid held for more than an hour and then broke in five seconds.
