The day before
On October 5, MOBX traded between $0.64 and $0.94 and closed at $0.65.
Two Business Wire headlines came out that day. At 8:40 a.m. one said a rare earth company, Winner Water, would join SPD and Mobix Labs in a National Security Matters Initiative. At 9:40 a.m. another said Mobix Labs' acquisition target SPD would acquire Winner Water, a company backed by $53 million in federal awards.
Pre-market and the open: nothing happened
Pre-market was thin. The high was $0.68 at 4:10 a.m. Only 139,238 shares traded before the bell, and the price stayed between about $0.63 and $0.68.
It opened at $0.655, less than 1% above the $0.65 close. For the first hour it crept up to $0.69 by 9:55, then drifted back. It dipped to $0.64 at 10:39.
Two bursts before noon
The first move started at 10:40. From about $0.64 it went to $0.77 at 10:49, then settled around $0.73.
At 11:04 it woke up again. That minute opened at $0.74 and closed at $0.78 on 243,891 shares, including three prints of about 31,000 to 37,000 shares at $0.7776 within the same second. It ran to $0.92 at 11:13, up about 44% from $0.64 at 10:40.
Then it fell. The 11:16 candle dropped from $0.85 to $0.76. By 11:22 it was at $0.70, down 24% from the top. Until noon it stayed between about $0.71 and $0.83.
Through $1.00, and the float trades
From $0.72 at 11:34 it climbed to $0.99 at 12:24, up 38%. A 46,100-share print went through at $0.9545 at 12:29.
At 12:36 it touched $1.00, and at 12:37 it traded above it for the first time that day. By 12:45 it had reached $1.07.
By 12:46, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (15.17 million). That minute was the busiest of the climb, with 764,732 shares, and it spiked to $1.14.
It kept going to $1.16 at 12:56, up 26% from $0.92 at 12:34. It faded to $1.03 by 1:02, and tagged $1.20 at 1:12.
The wall at $1.20
From 12:46 p.m. on, the book showed a lot of stock offered at exactly $1.20. It peaked at 188,692 shares at 1:57 p.m., about 1.2% of the float. It was not alone. A $1.25 ask wall peaked at 171,719 shares at 1:40 p.m. A $1.30 ask wall had been showing since 12:51. So there was stock for sale at several round steps above the price.
For over an hour, price chopped between about $1.06 and $1.20 under the wall. At 2:21 it was at $1.15.
Stop It's 2:22. MOBX is at $1.15. Just above, a $1.20 ask wall has been up since 12:46 and peaked near 188,000 shares, with more offered at $1.25 and $1.30. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 2:22 p.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 2:19 p.m. ET.
Here's what happened. At 2:22:50 trades began hitting $1.20. In 4.2 seconds, 148,617 shares traded at exactly $1.20 and the wall was gone. Buyers ate it.
The next wall fell too. At 2:25:53 trades began hitting $1.25, and 61,559 shares traded at exactly $1.25 in 9.6 seconds. At 2:26:04 a 5,000-share buy would have averaged $1.24, again no worse than the screen.
From $1.09 at 2:18 it ran to $1.26, the high of the day, at 2:29. Within seven minutes it was back at $1.15.
The rest of the day
It came back once more. At 3:00 p.m. it pushed to $1.20, a lower high under the $1.26 top. From there it drifted: $1.14 at 3:06, $1.19 at 3:34 and $1.11 at the close, 12% under the high.
Late in the day another ask wall showed up, at $1.28. It was first seen at 3:55 p.m. and peaked at 180,157 shares at 3:58 p.m. From 3:55 to the close the stock stayed at or below $1.16.
By the close, 28.45 million shares had traded in the regular session: the float changed hands nearly 2 times, at about 12 times its normal volume.
After hours
The stock slipped to $1.00 at 5:00 p.m. The company filed two 424B3 prospectuses, at 4:58 and 5:03 p.m.
At 6:03 p.m. Business Wire ran: “Mobix Labs to Host Investor Update Call on Critical Minerals Strategy and Business Outlook.” The stock was at $1.06 then and traded between $1.03 and $1.08 for the rest of the evening. After-hours volume was 1.81 million shares.
What to take from it
- A wall can break fast and still be a level. The $1.20 wall took 4.2 seconds to eat, but price topped only six cents above it, at $1.26.
- Not every break costs extra. Here the book above the wall was deep, and a 5,000-share buy at each fill moment averaged the screen price.
- After the top, the next push stopped lower. $1.26 at 2:29 p.m., then $1.20 at 3:00 p.m. The run did not get back above $1.26.
