The day before, and a quiet morning
On September 30, WFCF traded just 345 shares. The official close was $11.06.
At 12:15 a.m. on October 1, an EFFECT notice was posted (a registration was declared effective). That is the only news item in our data for the day.
Nothing traded pre-market. The first trade was 3 shares at $11.03 at 9:30, a little under the $11.06 close. The float is small, 2.28 million shares. Many minutes in the morning had no trades at all, and no minute before 11:29 had more than 17 shares. The price sat between $11.02 and $11.55. The exception was 10:38, when a 17-share minute touched $12.13 and was back at $11.34 by the end of the minute.
11:29: the volume arrives
At 11:29 the stock traded 500 shares in one minute, starting at $11.43 and reaching a high of $12.00. That was the biggest minute of the day up to then. At 11:31 it touched $12.56.
Stop It's 11:32. WFCF is at $12.80, up from $11.43 at 11:29. Before 11:29 it traded a few shares a minute. Would you buy here?

Here's what happened. The 11:32 minute traded 4,778 shares and reached $13.46. At 11:33:03 it was halted on a volatility pause (LULD). The last trade before the halt was $12.80. The halt lasted ten minutes. At 11:43:04 it reopened at $15.25, $2.45 above where it stopped.
It kept going. At 11:45 it hit $16.00, on 14,825 shares in that one minute. By 11:46 it was down to $13.35, and at 11:47:36 it was halted again.
Reopens, and a flush to $10.67
From here the halts came often, 11 more in about two hours. Each one after the first lasted five minutes. This is the part a chart doesn't show you: the book right after each reopen we measured was thin.
The price slid. It was halted again at 11:54:39 and reopened at 11:59:39. The 12:00 minute went down to $11.00, 31% below the $16.00 high. At 12:02 it reached $10.67, the low so far, on 13,051 shares.
Across the 11 reopens we have fills for, the screen price had fewer than 400 shares behind it every time. The extra cost of a 5,000-share buy ranged from $1,936 to $21,132.
Up and down, halt after halt
At 12:03 it jumped to $12.55 and was halted at 12:04:03. When it reopened at 12:09:03 it ran from $12.55 to $14.88 within the minute. At 12:11 it reached $15.79 on 28,870 shares, 43% above the $11.08 low of 12:03.
Then the swings repeated. It was halted at 12:15 and 12:21, and it fell to $11.05 at 12:30. It was halted again at 12:32 and reopened at 12:37. The 12:52 halt reopened at 12:57, and the stock ran from $12.21 to $14.76 by 12:58, then touched $14.98 at 1:00 p.m. Halts at 1:03, 1:15 and 1:27 p.m. followed. At 1:33 p.m. it reached $15.90.
By 1:38 p.m. it was down to $13.20.
A twelfth halt
At 1:43 p.m. it was halted for the twelfth time. It reopened at 1:48:43.
Stop It's 1:49 p.m. WFCF reopened from its 12th halt a minute ago and is at $15.85. The high of the day so far is $16.00, from 11:45. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 1:49 p.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 1:46 p.m. ET.
Here's what happened. The 1:49 minute went to $17.30. At 1:50 p.m. it hit $18.44 on 40,808 shares, the biggest minute of the day. It dipped to $16.60 at 1:51, then made $18.73, the high of the day, at 1:53 p.m. That is 69% above the $11.06 previous close. In the next minute it dipped to $16.50.
From there it slid. It was $15.13 at 2:00 p.m. and $13.77 at 2:02 p.m., 26% below the top.
The rest of the day
At 2:06 p.m. it pushed to $15.00, a lower high under the $18.73 top. After that the volume dried up. Most minutes traded a few hundred shares or fewer.
The price drifted: $12.15 at 2:43 p.m., a spike to $13.78 at 3:08 p.m., and $12.72 at the end of the 3:59 minute, 32% below the high. After hours, 15,335 shares traded between $12.15 and $13.36.
For the regular session, 1.02 million shares traded: less than half the float changed hands, at about 215 times the stock's normal volume. It was halted 12 times.
What to take from it
- Halt reopens on a thin float are expensive. In every reopen we measured, a 5,000-share market buy cost between $1,936 and $21,132 more than the screen price, because only a few hundred shares or fewer sat at it.
- A stock that trades a few shares a minute can move 69% in a few hours. Here it went from $11.06 to $18.73 on less than half the float, after a morning of almost nothing.
- After the top, the next push stopped lower. $18.73 at 1:53 p.m., then $15.00 at 2:06 p.m. By the end of the 3:59 minute it was at $12.72, still above the $11.06 previous close.
