The news and the 4 a.m. open

On September 28, BKYI traded between $1.65 and $1.96. The official close was $1.68.

At 3:30 a.m. on the 29th, GlobeNewsWire ran this headline: “BIO-key Partners with Al Majlis Group to Expand Identity Security Across Arabian Gulf”. Trading opened at 4:00 a.m.

The first trade was $2.11, already above the $1.68 close. In that first minute the price ranged from $1.83 (the low so far) to $2.70. It fell back to $2.15 by 4:02, then ran to $3.27 at 4:09.

By 4:05 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (1.00 million).

It dipped to $2.76 at 4:28 and then ran to the pre-market high, $3.60 at 4:43 a.m. After that it drifted down. It touched $3.24 at 5:56, then slid. At 6:47 it broke lower, and at 6:53 one sell order swept 86,934 shares through nine price levels, from $2.56 to $2.48. It reached $2.26 at 7:08 a.m., down 30% from $3.24 at 5:56.

From $2.32 at 7:27 it climbed to $3.07 at 8:20 a.m. By the bell, 39.13 million shares had traded pre-market.

The wall at $3.30

Earlier in the 9 a.m. hour, bid walls came and went near $2.90 and $2.99, each around 10% of the float. The next one was at $3.30. From 9:25 a bid sat at exactly $3.30 for a lot of stock. It peaked at 108,996 shares, 10.8% of the float, across all exchanges.

Here's what happened. In 5.5 seconds, from 9:27:36 to 9:27:42, 73,924 shares traded at exactly $3.30 and the wall was gone. It wasn't pulled. Sellers hit it, and the data has it eaten at 9:27:43.

After the wall went, the price dipped to $3.12 at 9:28, then rebounded. At 9:30:00 a single print of 81,105 shares went through at $3.31, and the stock opened at $3.37, up 101% from the previous close. The 9:30 minute traded 1.81 million shares.

Chop after the open

Until 9:59 it was chop. It ranged from $3.05 to $3.69 and stayed around $3.20 to $3.40 for much of it. At 9:50 it dipped to $3.05, and at 9:54 a single sell order swept 75,413 shares from $3.24 to $3.17.

In that one minute it went from $3.33 to a high of $4.05, on 1.57 million shares. Buy sweeps hit at 9:59:13 (79,127 shares) and twice at 9:59:59 (184,676 shares from $3.60 to $3.87, then 72,564 more up to $3.98). It touched $4.06 at 10:00, up 29% from the $3.15 low at 9:51, then pulled back to $3.65 within that minute.

At 10:04:49 a buy order swept 74,766 shares through 30 price levels, from $4.26 to $4.55. The stock hit $4.66, the high of the day, in the 10:04 minute, and closed that minute at $4.33.

The drop to $3.05

It slid to $3.86 by 10:10, held near $4.05 into 10:13, then dropped. At 10:14 it fell from $4.04 to $3.40, and a sell order at 10:14:15 swept 60,935 shares from $3.85 to $3.73. By 10:19 it was at $3.24.

From 10:16 a seller was offering stock at exactly $4.00. That ask wall grew to 97,734 shares (9.7% of the float) by 11:14. After 10:15 the stock never traded above $3.55.

It bottomed in this stretch at $3.05 at 10:42 a.m., down 35% from $4.66.

The rest of the day

Before that low it had bounced to $3.55 at 10:33. Afterward it reached $3.43 at 10:55. At 11:00 it reached $3.44. All three were well under the $4.66 top. By 11:18 it was back to $3.06.

At 12:11 it dropped from $3.15 to $2.91 in one minute, on 409,000 shares. The low after the open was $2.70 at 12:35, after a sell sweep of 63,854 shares from $2.77 to $2.71. A bid wall had been sitting at $2.60 since 11:42, growing to 98,311 shares by 12:44. It was pulled at 1:08 p.m., and the price never got down to it.

An ask wall appeared at $3.19 at 2:49 p.m., reached 85,609 shares at 3:54, and was pulled at 3:57. The stock closed the regular session at $3.14.
