The day before
On September 21, CWD traded between $0.47 and $0.55 on 159,319 shares and closed at $0.52. That is a quiet day for a stock with a 9.8-million-share float. The data shows no news headline for the 22nd.
Pre-market: thin and slow
The first trade of the 22nd came at 4:03 a.m. at $0.51. It slipped to $0.49 by 7:04 a.m. Then it drifted up. The pre-market high was $0.58 at 9:19 a.m. 41,091 shares traded before the bell.
The open and the first halt
It opened at $0.55, up 6% from the previous close. At 9:31 it traded through the pre-market high and reached $0.59.
The climb was slow until 9:37. Volume then picked up, and it reached $0.74 at 9:39. From $0.68 at 9:42 it kept going.
At 9:43:50 it was halted (a volatility pause). The last trade was $0.88. It reopened at 9:48:50 at $0.88. A single print of 252,480 shares crossed at $0.881 on the reopen, and a buy sweep of 47,374 shares ran from $0.88 to $0.90 across 17 price levels.
Second halt: a bid wall at $1.03
Within half a minute of the reopen it was halted again. At 9:49:19 the stock stopped with the last trade at $1.03.
The Level 2 book showed a bid wall at $1.03. It was first seen at 9:49:06 and peaked at 408,253 shares at 9:49:17, about 4% of the float.
The stock reopened at 9:54:19 at $0.97, 6% below where it stopped. A print of 334,140 shares crossed at $0.97. The $1.03 bid was pulled at 9:54:20, one second after the reopen. 7,050 shares traded at $1.03 in the second before it was gone.
The 9:54 minute still reached $1.04, up 54% from the $0.68 low at 9:42. Then it reversed. A sell sweep of 42,989 shares hit at 9:56:15, and it fell to $0.77 at 9:56, down 26% from $1.04.
Third halt and the wall at $1.00
It bounced back from $0.73 at 9:59. At 10:02:56 it was halted a third time with the last trade at $0.99. It reopened at 10:07:56 at $0.93, 6% below where it stopped.
By the end of the 10:07 minute, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (9.80 million).
Here is what a chart doesn't show. From 9:54, while the stock was halted, stock was being offered at exactly $1.00. The wall peaked at 110,921 shares at 10:07:57, about 1% of the float.
Stop It's 10:08. CWD is at $0.98. It reopened from its third halt a few seconds ago at $0.93. About 110,000 shares are offered at $1.00, just above. Would you buy here?
Press play: the real Level 2, time and sales and chart stop at 10:08 a.m. ET for your call, then show what happened. The clip starts at 10:05 a.m. ET.
Here's what happened. At 10:08:45 trades began printing at $1.00. In under a second, 46,983 shares traded at $1.00 and the wall was gone. A buy sweep of 67,449 shares ran from $0.9999 to $1.02. Buyers ate it. The high of the day came in that minute: $1.07 at 10:08.
The top did not hold. The 10:09 minute traded down to $0.88. An ask wall of 150,026 shares at $1.05 peaked at 10:10:06. The stock fell to $0.75 at 10:15, down 30% from $1.07.
The rest of the day
There was a bounce. At 10:20 it pushed to $0.84, a lower high under the $1.07 top. A sell sweep of 83,675 shares at 10:26:01 ran through 50 price levels. It traded as low as $0.72 at 10:27 and $0.61 at 11:17-11:18.
It had two more bounces, to $0.78 at 11:45 and $0.80 at 12:14. Neither got back to $0.84. In the afternoon it mostly drifted between about $0.64 and $0.70, with small pushes into the close, and closed at $0.72.
After hours it ran to $0.82 around 5:13 p.m. The data shows no news headline.
In the regular session, 30.39 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 3 times. For the whole day, volume was about 470 times normal.
What to take from it
- A big ask wall at a round number is a level, not a ceiling. The $1.00 wall of about 110,000 shares was gone in under a second, and the high of the day came in the same minute.
- A halt can reopen lower than it stopped, and buying at each of these reopens cost more than the screen showed. The 9:49 halt stopped at $1.03 and reopened at $0.97. At the third reopen, 111 shares were offered at the screen price.
- After the top, the next push stopped lower. $1.07 at 10:08, then $0.84 at 10:20. The stock closed at $0.72, 33% below the high.
