Pre-market and the open

The previous close was $0.86. The first trades of the day came at 6:44 a.m., near $0.88. Trading was very thin. The pre-market high was $0.91 at 9:25 a.m. Just 619 shares traded before the bell.

It opened at $0.92, up 7% from the previous close. It slipped to $0.88 by 9:40, then worked higher in small steps. At 9:47 it reached $0.97.

Testing $1.00

At 9:55 it touched $1.00 for the first time. It pulled back to $0.96 the next minute and sat there. Trading was sparse. Several minutes passed with no trades at all.

Here's what happened. The 10:05 minute closed at $1.03 on 8,729 shares. In the 10:06 minute it ran to $1.20 on 29,938 shares. In the 10:07 minute it hit $1.31 on 73,302 shares. Volume was growing quickly while the price climbed.

The halt and the reopen

At 10:07:24 it was halted (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $1.31. During the halt, sell orders started to appear on the book. At 10:10:09 there was an ask wall at $1.43. By 10:10:10 it held 72,000 shares, 2.0% of the float. A second wall formed at $1.46 a moment later and reached 38,342 shares.

It reopened at 10:12:24 at $1.39, 6% above where it stopped. At the reopen, a single print of 98,333 shares at $1.39 went through.

The walls at $1.43 and $1.46 were gone within seconds of the reopen. They were pulled at 10:12:29 and 10:12:28. The price never reached either of them. The high of the day was $1.40, in the 10:12 minute.

Selling came fast. At 10:12:27 one sell order swept 20,142 shares from $1.38 down to $1.32 across 7 price levels. A second one at 10:12:28 sold 21,754 shares from $1.33 to $1.31. The 10:12 candle traded 521,350 shares, low $1.08, and closed at $1.12.

A lower high at $1.30

It bounced right away. The 10:13 minute went from $1.13 to $1.29. At 10:13:54 one buy order swept 21,859 shares from $1.24 to $1.28.

New ask walls appeared at $1.30 (10:13:20) and $1.40 (10:13:23). The $1.40 wall reached 56,903 shares, 1.6% of the float, at 10:14:09. At 10:14 the stock pushed to $1.30, a lower high under the $1.40 top. Sells swept through at 10:14:04 (11,487 shares) and 10:14:28 (14,471 shares).

The slide to $0.74

From there it came down in steps. At 10:16 it traded as low as $0.97. At 10:20:57 one sell order took 10,616 shares from $1.00 to $0.9945 across 12 levels.

Another sharp drop came at 10:24. A single sell swept 20,816 shares from $0.92 to $0.8927 across 34 price levels. The 10:24 candle fell to $0.77. At 10:24:28 a buy order swept 10,842 shares from $0.8022 to $0.8163. The minute closed at $0.78.

It then drifted for 20 minutes with small volume. A sell at 10:38:47 took 12,572 shares from $0.80 to $0.776. The low of the day was $0.7362 at 10:44, below the $0.86 previous close and the $0.92 open.

The rest of the day

It recovered to $0.84 by 11:13, then moved sideways. By 11:32 a.m., more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (3.60 million).

At 12:22:52 an ask wall of 48,710 shares appeared at $0.7857. It was pulled at 12:24:44. At 12:25 a single print of 31,865 shares at $0.75 went through at the bid. That 12:25 minute traded 45,897 shares and low was $0.7466.

In the afternoon an ask wall appeared at $0.88 at 3:01:03 p.m. and grew to 50,934 shares by 3:26:39 p.m. The stock did not trade above $0.84 for the rest of the session. It closed at $0.80, 43% under the $1.40 high of the day and below the $0.86 previous close.

For the regular session, 3.97 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 1.1 times, at 320 times its normal volume. After hours added 134,004 shares and a high of $0.88 at 5:16 p.m.

What to take from it

• The biggest bar of the day was the reopen minute, and it ended near the bottom of its range. The 10:12 candle traded 521,350 shares, high $1.40, and closed at $1.12.
• What the screen shows can change in a second. At 10:12:24 a 5,000-share buy averaged $484 above the screen. One second later the same buy cost $0 extra.
• After the top, the next push stopped lower. $1.40 at 10:12, then $1.30 at 10:14. The stock closed at $0.80, below where the day began.
