Before the headline

On August 18, SKK traded just 1,327 shares, between $4.20 and $4.60. The official close was $4.57. The float is 2.88 million shares.

The first trade on the 19th was at 4:01 a.m., $4.53, and it was a single share. For the next four hours it traded in small lots between about $4.30 and $4.96. At 7:59 a.m. it printed $4.32.

8:05: the headline and the spike

At 8:05 a.m. GlobeNewsWire ran: “SKK Holdings Awarded Six New Horizontal Directional Drilling and Utility Works Contracts in Singapore Valued at Up to US$26.6 Million (S$34.1 Million)”. The 8:05 minute went from $4.96 to a high of $6.77.

The pre-market high was $7.44 at 8:06 a.m. But it didn't hold. It fell to $5.23 at 8:07, bounced to $7.07 at 8:09, and then slid. By 8:14 a.m. it hit $3.76, the low so far, below the $4.57 close.

About 940,000 of the 1.41 million pre-market shares traded in those ten minutes, from 8:05 to 8:14. After that it was quiet. It chopped between about $3.96 and $5.74 until the open.

The open and the first five halts

It opened at $4.83, up 6% from the close. The low since the open was $4.68 at 9:34 a.m. At 9:39 it ran from $4.99 to $5.37, and at 9:39:36 it was halted (a volatility pause).

It reopened at 9:49 at $6.00, traded up to $6.60, and was halted again at 9:49:58. It reopened at 9:59:59 at $7.42. That second was busy: a single print of 45,483 shares at $7.42, and one buy order swept 10,217 shares from $6.70 to $7.30 across 15 levels.

At 10:00 it hit $8.16. At 10:00:24 it was halted a third time, and it reopened at 10:05 at $7.00, 14% below where it stopped. A 42,947-share print went at $7.00. Two seconds later a buy order swept 13,138 shares from $6.30 to $6.68.

Halt number four came at 10:06:18, after a last trade of $6.46. It reopened at 10:16 at $6.00. Halt number five came at 10:16:38 with the last trade at $6.60. This one lasted until 10:27:08.

The wall at $8.00

From 10:05:57, someone was offering stock at exactly $8.00. It peaked at 36,369 shares at 10:27:14, which is 1.3% of the float.

The fifth halt ended at 10:27:08 with a 27,120-share print at $7.50. That was 14% above where it stopped.

From 10:27:45 trades printed at $8.00. In 10.6 seconds, 30,922 shares traded at exactly $8.00 and the wall was gone. It wasn't pulled. Buyers ate it.

Here's what happened. It ran to $8.81, the high so far, in the 10:29 minute and closed that minute at $8.68. The next minute traded as low as $7.63.

A lower high, then four more halts

At 10:29:46 a new ask wall showed up at $9.00. It peaked at 22,951 shares at 10:32:28. The price did not trade at $9.00 that morning.

The 10:30 minute pushed to $8.76, and at 10:31 it pushed to $8.30, each high lower than the last. An ask wall at $8.30 showed up at 10:31:43. It peaked at 20,823 shares at 10:33:03 and was pulled at 10:36:23.

At 10:33:11 it was halted after a last trade of $7.28. It reopened at 10:43 at $7.00, was halted again at 10:43:38, reopened at 10:48 at $6.06, was halted at 10:49:06, and reopened at 10:54 at $5.21. That's three halts in 16 minutes, and every reopening was lower than the one before.

By the end of the 10:55 minute, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (2.88 million).

It bounced to $6.02 by 10:59, and at 10:59:11 it was halted for the ninth time. It reopened at 11:04 near $6.00. Within five minutes it was at $5.16. By 11:24 it was at $5.20.

The afternoon

At 12:03 it was halted at $5.20 and reopened at 12:08 at $5.21. At 12:10:07 a bid wall of 32,332 shares (1.1% of the float) showed up at $5.25. It was pulled at 12:11:20.

From there it went quiet. Until about 1:25 p.m., most minutes traded a few thousand shares or fewer, in a band between about $5.20 and $5.96.

Here's what happened. The 1:26 minute ran to $6.40 on 21,111 shares. One buy order swept 10,507 shares from $5.96 to $6.00 at 1:26:15. At 1:26:57 an ask wall appeared at $8.00 (24,680 shares at its peak). At 1:28:45 another appeared at $6.50. It peaked at 41,212 shares at 1:30:54, 1.4% of the float. The afternoon high was $6.46 at 1:27, before that wall appeared.

At 1:31:56 it was halted with a last trade of $5.55. It reopened at 1:36 at $5.32.

It was halted a twelfth time at 1:37:29 and reopened at 1:42 at $5.85. After that it drifted between about $5.30 and $6.07. It closed at $5.80, 34% under the $8.81 high of the day.

The regular session traded 2.51 million shares. For the whole day, 3.96 million shares traded: the float changed hands about 1.4 times, at about 1,500 times its normal volume. It was halted 12 times.

After hours

After the close, 49,592 shares traded. At 4:51 p.m. the company filed a 6-K (a foreign company's current report). The stock was trading near $5.55 that minute. Its after-hours high was $5.98 at 7:41 p.m.

What to take from it

• A halt can reopen lower than it stopped. The 10:00 halt stopped at $8.16 and reopened at $7.00. The 1:31 p.m. halt stopped at $5.55 and reopened at $5.32.
• Buying right after a reopen costs more than the screen says. The book was thin: 604 shares at $7.60 became a $667 gap, and 24 shares at $5.39 became $2,979.
• After the top, the next push stopped lower. $8.81 at 10:29, then $8.76 at 10:30 and $8.30 at 10:31. By the close it was $5.80.
