The day before and pre-market

On August 7, THH traded 7,399 shares, between $2.12 and $2.58, and closed at $2.29. The float is 3.09 million shares, so that was a very quiet stock.

Pre-market was just as quiet. One bar traded, at 9:25 a.m., 60 shares at $2.21. That was the low of the day, below the $2.29 close. No news item appears in the data for the day.

Five hours of drift

It opened at $2.30, a cent above the previous close. Many minutes had only a handful of shares. The 9:30 bar was 9 shares.

The morning high came at 10:00 a.m., $2.81, on a 1,255-share minute. Then it sagged back. At 10:02 it touched $2.42.

From there it spent most of the next five hours between about $2.50 and $2.80. At 1:30 p.m. it printed $2.75 and at 2:10 p.m. $2.79, and neither went through the morning high.

2:58 p.m.: the first stop

Here's what happened. In the 2:58 minute it ran from $2.79 to $3.26, its first trade through $3.00, on 4,259 shares. In the 2:59 minute it went from $3.42 to $3.80 on 14,625 shares. At 2:59:43 p.m. it was halted (a volatility pause) with the last trade at $3.80.

The halt lasted until 3:13:15 p.m. It reopened at $4.35, 14% above where it stopped. The first print was 11,386 shares at $4.35.

The top at $4.99

The high so far, $4.99, came in that same 3:13 minute. The minute traded 67,498 shares. The next minute traded 82,115 and fell to $4.44. By 3:15 it was down to $4.29.

The Level 2 screen showed two large ask walls above the high. One was 25,000 shares at $5.75, about 0.8% of the float, seen from 3:14:05 and pulled at 3:15:12. The other, at $5.79, appeared at 3:15:36.

3:16 p.m.: the second stop

Here's what happened. At 3:16 it pushed to $4.67, a lower high under the $4.99 top, and closed the minute at $4.63. The $5.79 wall peaked at 26,250 shares, about 0.9% of the float, at 3:16:12 and was pulled at 3:16:56.

At 3:17:07 a single sell order of 13,142 shares went through 24 price levels, from $4.63 to $4.31, in 50 milliseconds. At 3:17:27 p.m. the stock was halted again (a volatility pause), with the last trade at $3.72. That is $1.27 under the high from four minutes earlier.

It reopened at 3:22:27 p.m. at $3.60, 3% below where it stopped. The first print was 13,136 shares at $3.60.

The fade and after hours

It tried once more. At 3:25 it ran from $4.00 to $4.65 on 135,930 shares, the busiest minute of the day. That was still under $4.67, and it never got back to the $4.99 top.

From there it slid: $3.15 at 3:39, $2.94 at 3:54, and $3.08 at the close, 38% below the high.

After hours it dropped to $2.54 by 4:09 p.m., bounced to $3.00 at 4:40 p.m., and last traded at $2.53 at 7:59 p.m. After-hours volume was 183,031 shares.

By the close, 1.53 million shares had traded: about half the float changed hands. The day before it was 7,399 shares. Counting after hours, the whole day was 1.71 million shares, about 310 times normal volume.

What to take from it

• THH did little for five hours, then moved in a few minutes of trading. THH sat near $2.60 until 2:58 p.m., then reached $4.99 by 3:13 p.m.
• At both halt reopens, a 5,000-share buy cost more than the screen showed. At 3:13:16 a 5,000-share buy averaged $4.52 against $4.39 on screen. At 3:22:28 it was $3.69 against $3.59.
• After the top, the next push stopped lower. $4.99 at 3:13 p.m., then $4.67 at 3:16 p.m., then $4.65 at 3:25. The regular session closed at $3.08.
