Pre-market: quiet, up to $2.55

The first trades on the 3rd were at $2.52, above the $2.40 close. The pre-market high was $2.55 at 4:00 a.m., in the very first minute.

After that it drifted between about $2.31 and $2.55. 24,551 shares traded before the bell. It opened at $2.38, down 1% from the previous close.

The climb to the halt

At 9:46 a.m. it cleared the pre-market high of $2.55. At 9:55 a.m. it traded through $3.00. That minute alone had 9,576 shares, and the next minute had 49,122.

At 9:56:54 it was halted (a volatility pause). The last trade was $3.56. It reopened at 10:01:54 a.m. at $3.57. A single 39,220-share trade printed at $3.57 at the reopen.

The 10:02 minute reached $4.30, on 251,496 shares. By the end of 10:03, more shares had traded than exist in the whole float (501,809).

Two minutes after the reopen

Here's what happened. In the 10:04 minute it went from $3.99 to a high of $4.70 and closed at $4.69, on 277,285 shares. At 10:04:35 a single buy order of 12,588 shares swept from $4.15 to $4.25 across 10 price levels. Ten seconds later another, of 11,741 shares, ran $4.23 to $4.39 across 16 levels. At 10:04:52 a third bought 13,137 shares from $4.49 to $4.53.

The high so far was $4.75, in the 10:05 minute, up 98% from the previous close. That minute also traded as low as $4.11 and closed at $4.30.

Within four minutes it was back at $3.32. By 10:07 the bars were closing under $4.00.

A lower high at $3.87

At 10:10 a.m. it pushed to $3.87, a lower high under the $4.75 top, and closed that minute at $3.42.

The order book showed large asks above. An ask wall appeared at $3.90 at 10:10:38 and peaked at 37,982 shares (7.6% of the float). It was pulled at 10:15:55, and a new wall of about 35,000 shares formed at $3.70.

The bid at $3.16

At 10:08:28 a bid wall appeared at $3.10 and grew to 44,131 shares. At 10:09:46 it was pulled, and a new bid appeared at $3.16. It peaked at 43,700 shares at 10:15:42, 8.7% of the float. The 10:17 candle closed on $3.16 and the stock bounced from it.

Here's what happened. From 10:23:11 to 10:23:27, 17,713 shares traded at exactly $3.16 in 16.5 seconds, and the wall was gone. It was eaten at 10:23:28. Two minutes later, at 10:25, the stock dropped to $2.88.

The rest of the day

After 10:20 it did not trade above $3.30. It traded $2.88 at 10:25 a.m., fell to $2.58 at 11:27 a.m., and spent the afternoon around $2.72 to $2.98. It closed at $2.74.

By the close, 2.76 million shares had traded: the float changed hands about 5.5 times, at about 1.9 times its normal volume.

After the close, at 4:16 p.m., the company filed a 6-K (a foreign company's current report). The stock traded between $2.69 and $2.91 after hours, on 34,700 shares.

What to take from it

• After the top, the next push stopped lower. $4.75 at 10:05 a.m., then $3.87 at 10:10 a.m.
• Right after this halt reopen, a market buy cost more than the screen showed. Here, a 5,000-share buy averaged $1,015 above the screen at the reopen.
• A big bid is not a floor. The 43,700-share bid at $3.16 was gone by 10:23:28, after 17,713 shares traded at that price in 16.5 seconds.
