VWAP (volume-weighted average price)

VWAP, the volume-weighted average price, is the average price a stock has traded at so far today, with each price weighted by the number of shares traded there. It starts fresh each session and is drawn on an intraday chart as a single line that moves with the day's trading.

Why it matters to a small-cap momentum trader

Day traders read VWAP as the day's fair price. Above it, the average buyer today is in profit and buyers are in control; below it, the average buyer is under water and rallies tend to meet sellers. Momentum traders often look for a long entry on a pullback that holds VWAP, or on a reclaim of VWAP after a dip, and treat a clean break below it as a reason to get out. Large traders measure their own fills against VWAP, which is one reason price often reacts there.

How it is calculated

VWAP = the sum of price × volume for every trade today, divided by the total volume today.

On a chart it is usually built bar by bar from each bar's typical price, (high + low + close) ÷ 3, times its volume. Because it is cumulative, VWAP moves a lot early in the day and less as volume builds.

There is no exchange rule behind VWAP. It is a calculation, and traders treat it as a level.

VWAP in Hindsight Markets

VWAP is one of the chart studies, drawn from the bars of the day you replay, so it never includes a trade the clock has not reached yet. The scanner can rank by distance from VWAP, and the journal shows VWAP on the chart of every trade you open.

A worked example: VWAP over three bars

An illustration with made-up numbers, not a real stock or a real day.

BarHigh, low, closeTypical priceVolumePrice × volume
12.10, 1.90, 2.002.00100,000200,000
22.30, 2.00, 2.212.17300,000651,000
32.25, 2.10, 2.132.16100,000216,000

VWAP after bar 3 = (200,000 + 651,000 + 216,000) ÷ (100,000 + 300,000 + 100,000) = 1,067,000 ÷ 500,000 = 2.134.

A plain average of the three typical prices would be 2.11. VWAP sits higher because the heaviest volume traded in bar 2, at the higher price.

Common mistakes small-cap traders make with VWAP

Common questions

Is VWAP a good indicator for day trading?
It is one of the most watched intraday levels, and that is much of why price reacts there. Like any indicator it describes what has traded; it does not predict what comes next.
What time frame is best for VWAP?
VWAP is a running total for the day, so it reads about the same on a 1-minute or a 5-minute chart; small differences come from how each bar's price is estimated. It is an intraday tool and means little on a daily chart.
What is the difference between VWAP and a moving average?
A moving average gives each bar in its window the same weight and never resets. VWAP weights every price by the volume traded there and starts again each day.
What is anchored VWAP?
The same calculation started from a bar you choose, such as the candle that broke the news, instead of the start of the day. It shows the average price paid by everyone who bought since that moment.
What are VWAP bands?
Lines drawn a set number of standard deviations above and below VWAP, measuring how far price usually strays from it that day. Traders use the outer bands to judge when a move is stretched. Hindsight Markets has them as the VWAP Bands study.
Does VWAP include the pre-market?
It depends on the platform. Some start VWAP with the first pre-market trade, others at the 9:30 open, and many let you choose. Check before you compare levels with other traders.

How to practise it in Hindsight Markets

  1. Open a past day and add the VWAP study to a 1-minute chart. It draws as an amber line.
  2. Add the From VWAP % column to a scan to see which movers are stretched above it and which are sitting on it.
  3. Pick a stock pulling back toward VWAP, slow the replay to half speed, and decide your entry and stop before price reaches the line.
  4. Add the Anchored VWAP study, anchored at the time of the news candle, and see which line price respects.
  5. Open the trade in the journal, where VWAP is drawn on the trade's chart, and check where you bought against it.
