Hotkeys

Trading hotkeys are keyboard shortcuts that send a complete order in one key press: the side, the size, the order type and the price, such as buy 1,000 shares at the ask plus five cents. Day traders use them because on a fast small cap the seconds spent typing an order can cost more than the commission.

Why it matters to a small-cap momentum trader

A low-float runner can move twenty cents while you type a price into a ticket. Hotkeys turn the decision into a single action, so the entry happens at the price you saw, and, just as important, so does the exit. The same speed cuts the other way: a key pressed by mistake sends a real order. Good hotkey setups are built so the most damaging keys are hard to hit by accident and the most urgent ones, getting out, are the easiest.

A typical small-cap hotkey set

Buy. A marketable limit at the ask plus a few cents, for a set share count. Some traders keep two or three buy keys for different sizes.

Sell half. A limit at the bid minus a few cents for half the position, to take partial profit.

Sell all, or flatten. Close the whole position at once, the most important key on the board.

Cancel all. Pull every working order for the stock, so a stale order does not fill after you have changed your mind.

Short and cover. The same pattern for the short side, where the stock and broker allow it.

The offset is the key idea. A buy at the ask plus 0.05 fills like a market order when the size is there, but never pays more than five cents over the ask you saw, which caps the slippage on a thin book.

Hotkeys in Hindsight Markets

Hotkeys live under Settings. Each one carries its own size, in shares or as a percent of the position, its order type, a price reference of market, bid, ask, mid or last with an offset in ticks, cents or percent, a time in force and a route. The actions are buy, sell, cancel, cancel all, cancel all for the symbol, flatten, reverse and flatten all. Cancel all, flatten and reverse ask for a confirm by default, and you can turn it on or off for any key.

A worked example: what a hotkey offset caps

An illustration with made-up numbers, not a real stock or a real day.

The key. Buy 2,000 shares, limit at the ask plus 0.05.

The book. The ask is 6.20 for 500 shares, then 700 at 6.23 and 3,000 at 6.30. You press the key: the limit is 6.20 + 0.05 = 6.25.

The fill. 500 at 6.20 and 700 at 6.23 fill; 6.30 is above the limit, so the other 800 shares rest at 6.25. Filled: 1,200 shares at (500 × 6.20 + 700 × 6.23) ÷ 1,200 = (3,100 + 4,361) ÷ 1,200 = 7,461 ÷ 1,200 ≈ 6.218.

A market order instead. It would also take 800 at 6.30, for an average of (7,461 + 800 × 6.30) ÷ 2,000 = 12,501 ÷ 2,000 ≈ 6.25, on a full position.

The limit gave a better price on fewer shares. Neither is free: the offset decides how much of the position you are willing to miss to protect the price.

Common mistakes traders make with hotkeys

Common questions

What are hotkeys in day trading?
Keys or key combinations that send a complete order instantly, with the side, size, order type and price set in advance. They replace clicking and typing on the order ticket.
What are the best hotkeys for day trading?
There is no single set. Most momentum traders start with a buy at the ask plus an offset, a sell half, a sell all at the bid minus an offset, and a cancel all, then add short-side keys if they short.
Why do traders use the ask plus an offset instead of a market order?
The offset makes the order fill like a market order when shares are there, while capping the price it can pay. On a thin book that cap can save more than the few cents it costs.
Are hotkeys dangerous?
They can be. A single press sends a real order, so a wrong key costs money at once. Confirms on the destructive keys, careful spacing and practice before trading live reduce the risk.
Do hotkeys work in the pre-market?
Yes, if they send limit orders and a time in force that trades the extended session. Keys that send market orders are usually refused before 9:30 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. ET.

How to practise it in Hindsight Markets

  1. Open Settings, then Hotkeys. Start from the defaults: B buys, S sells and Ctrl or Cmd with the period key cancels all.
  2. Set your buy key to a limit at the ask plus an offset, and add a sell half key at 50% of the position.
  3. Bind flatten to a limit exit, so it also works in the pre-market.
  4. Open a past trading day, slow it to half speed, and trade a runner with the keys only.
  5. Open the trades in the journal and check the Slip column to see what each key's offset saved or cost.

Practice this on a real past day in Hindsight Markets

Set up your own hotkeys, then trade a real past morning at half speed until the keys are faster than your second thoughts.
